Holy Day Guidance Tishrei 5777 September 2016

For each day of the Ten Days of Awe (Ten Day of Seeing) we consider one of the Ten Commandments. The dates and the commandments for each date are below.

There are candles lit before sunset of (Erev) Rosh HaShanah, (Erev) Shabbat Shuvah and (Erev) Yom Kippur. Those dates are also listed below and the blessing is also included below.

For Yom Kippur, Wednesday, October 12, 2016, find a congregation in your area where you can attend Neilah Concluding Services. These services are at the end of the Yom Kippur day of prayer. Many congregations allow non-members entry to this service and usually without cost. Check ahead of the day for policy and times at your area congregations.

On kindling the lights, say:

Commandment ONE:
I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

Monday, October 3, 2016 Rosh HaShanah Day
During this day of Rosh Hashanah consider commandment 1

Commandment ONE:
I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

During the day of Monday we do Tashlich (releasing) in which we ask God to "release our sins where they will be washed away in the depths of the sea." We do this at a body of living (not stagnant) water (sea, river, lake, etc.) Prior to going to the water, we write on a sheet of paper in washable ink a list of our sins. That is, we reconsider our deeds of the prior year and where we did not live our lives as we are to live our lives ie with freedom and respect. We write this on paper and then for tashlich take this list to the waterside. Here, we ask that all the energy that we put in improper directions be released from us. We then wash the list we wrote in the water in a movement of release. The ink goes into the water and we release what we need to release of our past.
